Look at it: it is a soft boot, to be worn like the Puss In Boots did in the fairy tale: to travel in time, to cross the Mediterranean re-discovering Greek and Roman culture, to seek dreams and flavours from an enchanted land that travellers have described in their diaries forever. Italy is this boot that welcomes and seduces you: to discover it, our guide shall be the fearless pilots from the “Mille Miglia”, the most ancient and heroic car race in Europe. Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Lamborghini: racing cars fireballing across the Pianura Padana plains, between the Alps and Milan, accompanying the great river Po towards its estuary in the Adriatic sea, a step away from Venice and its lagoon. But our race is now turning south, in sight of the two towers of Bologna “La Dotta” (the learned), where the most ancient Italian university was founded, where Galileo Galilei taught; where tortellini and tagliatelle, Parmesan cheese and Parma ham were invented.

Our car is now steeply climbing the woods of the Appennine, and from the top of a mountain pass we can admire the Tuscan plains, the cupola of Santa Maria del Fiore church in Florence. Turning right, in the distance we can now spot the leaning towers of Pisa, the thousand towers of San Gimingnano and Volterra, and then the Tyrrhenian sea with its secret gulfs, the beautiful Argentario promontory, the Elba island from which Napoleon escaped before his last battle. And further on to Sardinia, the island known for its ancient nuraghi (prehistoric buildings), for its pink beaches and its proudest of men. If we look to the left, beyond Ravenna and its mosaics, we can see the Marche and Abruzzo regions, with their soft hills washed by the Adriatic sea: lands to be discovered, treasures of art to be held in our hearts, like the Reggia di Urbino; and then a breathless descent south from beach to beach all the way to Apulia and then to the woods and fjords of Calabria.

The race is back on again, in the far distance we can see Rome and Naples, we can smell the scent of history, the fascination of sun and lemon trees, the call of spaghetti and pizza. The Eternal City welcomes us, the one that dominated the world with its emperors and still leads the faithful Christians from the Basilica of Saint Peter, where the Pope sits. Now the treasure chest of the Reign of Two Sicilies opens up, continental Italy ends in the most mysterious and striking island of them all: the island that was Magna Graecia, that saw the passage of Carthaginians and Normans, French and Spaniards, Germans and Americans, yet has remained itself… the land of Leopards.

This is Italy, the land of sun, sea and art, of colours and flavours that cannot be forgotten. This is the country that everyone, at least once in life, needs to see in order to realise what life is worth!
